Preschool Halloween Parties

Preschool Halloween Parties

Jane and Walt’s preschool classes had their Halloween parties this week.  The cuteness was killin’ me!  All of those little preschoolers running into school in their costumes…it was too much!

This year, Jane is Lambie from the show Doc McStuffins this year.  I love her cute little costume!  So soft and cuddly!

Sweet big sister Jane opened up her treat bag the second we got home from preschool, and she started divvying out the goods to her little brothers.  “Here, Walt, this one’s for you!  Oh, Harry, you better not have that one.  You’ll probably choke!  Here, you can have the bag to tear up!  You like to tear things up, don’t you?”  She’s such a sweetie to those brothers!

Walt (aka “Sully” from Monsters Inc.) had his preschool Halloween party this morning.  He was PUMPED!  “I’m gonna roar at everyone!”

Now that the school parties are over, we’re anxiously awaiting Halloween so that we can go trick-or-treating!  The kids CAN’T WAIT to visit all of our neighbors’ houses!

I haven’t done one of these in a long time.  7 Quick Takes (hosted by Jen Fulwiler over at Conversion Diary) is a quick post with 7 quick takes on anything.  Here’s a random photo recap of the week with a few miscellaneous items:
–  1  –
Harry got his first haircut this week.  He didn’t have much hair to begin with, so it was more like a trim of a few wisps of hair.  He was not a fan!  It was an afterthought after Jane and Walt got their haircuts.  I nearly missed photographing the moment since it wasn’t planned.  Fortunately, Philip got me to capture this milestone.  The life of the third-born!

Walt is sooooooooooo into letters these days.  He pulled this “W” out of our LeapFrog Letter Factory toy.  He carries it around the house with him and has insisted on sleeping with it a few nights this week.  If he can’t find it, we hear, “Where is my W?!”  Walt loves W so much that he insists every M must be confused and turns them the other way.

I got to spend an hour in adoration on Monday.  It was oh-so-glorious!  It was a gorgeous evening, so I got to walk to the church.  It’s pretty tough to beat some quiet time with the Lord.  Thank you to all of you who sent me your prayer intentions.  I’m putting ’em to work as best I can!  Please keep putting my intentions to work, too!

Philip snapped this pic of the kids at bathtime the other night.  It makes me giggle every time I see it.  These moments are dwindling since the kids keep asking for showers!

Someone posted this picture to Facebook, and I had to share it.  The woman who posted it said that these were her grandmother’s hospital discharge instructions from 62 years ago.  You’ve gotta read these!  My, how times have changed!

We’re having our family’s photos taken on Sunday.  I am so thrilled that the forecast looks great and that the leaves have held on.  Don’t get any crazy ideas about something Pinterest worthy, though!  We’re just hoping to get everyone looking at the camera at the same time.  I’m most excited to snap a few of just me and Philip at the end.  We haven’t had a professional photo of just the two of us taken since our wedding day!

Week in Review

Week in Review

A quick photo recap of the week:

My brother and sister-in-law hosted us for a fun football/September birthday party last Saturday.  The kids had a ball playing with their cousins.  I love watching their friendships grow every time we get together.  Aren’t they so lucky to have so many cousins?!

Harry and Sam
Jane and Lucy
Sunday afternoon, we attended my sister’s parish festival.  What a great event!  It was so well-organized, and they had a bunch of fun activities to choose from.
Jane was starstruck when she met some of the Husker cheerleaders and got to hold their pons
Jane and Walt both had a ball riding this adorable train around the parish parking lot

Philip took Walt to preschool on Tuesday, and he snapped this adorable shot.

Walt loves to bolt out of the car and find the nearest “big friend” to help him open the door since he can’t do it yet himself.  “Can you please help me open the door?!”
Philip walked to school with Harry to pick Walt up.  It was sprinkling, so he brought his huge golf umbrella along.  It kept the little guys dry for the walk home!

Harry had a check-up this week.  While I hung out with Harry during his check-up, Walt got to play cars with Daddy in his office.

He loves going to Daddy’s office!

Our family prayer time has migrated to our bedroom floor.  We sit in a circle on the floor, each family member shares their favorite part of the day, we say our prayers (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Guardian Angel prayer, and “God bless _____” every member of the family), then we do big hugs. Here are the kids doing their wrestle/hug time.

Harry is thrilled to finally be able to roughhouse with the big kids!

To my dismay, Mr. Harry mastered opening and emptying drawers this week.  Babyproofing more drawers got bumped up on the weekend to-do list.  The little stinker is just like Jane and Walt were at that age.  All of our children adore going from one drawer to the next as quickly as they can, removing and throwing whatever they can find as quickly as possible.

At least he’s adorable.  Just *look* at him on those tippy toes!

On Wednesday (October 1, the feast of St. Thérèse of Lisieux), Jane brought home this drawing.

“It’s me and my sister.”
“What are you doing in the picture?
“Thérèse and I are holding hands under a rainbow in heaven.”

Jane didn’t know it was St. Thérèse’s Feast Day, so it made this little drawing even sweeter.  Jane loves talking about Thérèse and prays for another baby sister all the time

We had another sweet surprise on Wednesday:

Philip found this outside when he came home from work.  “You are being prayed for today!”  Someone knew we were  missing our own “ittle bitty Little Flower” on the Feast of St. Thérèse.  How sweet and thoughtful!  Whoever you are, thank you!
While Walt was at preschool and Harry had his morning nap on Thursday, I gave Jane a little manicure at the kitchen table.  She requested pink with a coat of sparkles on top.  The girl was in heaven, and she proudly showed her fingers to her teacher at preschool pick-up.
Look what greeted me when I brought Jane and Walt home from gymnastics–a candlelit dinner!
While Jane, Walt, and I were at gymnastics, Philip was busy entertaining Harry and making a gourmet dinner.  He grilled some delicious ribs and asparagus and served them with fresh strawberries.  He even lit some taper candles to add to the fun.  What a guy!
Big hugs for Daddy as he left for work this morning
“Bye, bye, Daddy!”
It was a chilly fall today, but we had to get outside and soak in the sun before nap time.

What are you up to this weekend?  Any exciting plans?

Here’s what’s on our docket: a date night, a trip to get a new family pet (details to come!), serious baby-proofing, a possible outing for donuts pending the kids’ good behavior for their babysitter (C’mon, kids!  Mama wants donuts!), watching the Huskers, the 3rd Annual Mel Invitational (9-hole golf tournament with my family, named for Grandpa Mel), and getting Philip ready for his Pediatric Board exams on Monday.  It should be a fun weekend!  Please keep Philip in your prayers as he prepared for boards.

Picture Perfect Visit to Roca Berry Farm

Picture Perfect Visit to Roca Berry Farm

Last weekend was absolutely GORGEOUS!  We decided to take advantage of the beautiful day and make a family trip to Roca Berry Farm.

Jane struck this pose and said, “Mama, take my picture!”  She thought it was her senior photo shoot.

Poor Walt!  A chicken pecked him through the fence.  Fortunately, Daddy was there to swoop in with a big kiss.  Every time we moved on to a new activity, Walt would ask, “Will the mean chicken be there?!”
I think I took 50 pictures of them in front of this tree.  This was the best one.  It’s got Christmas card written all over it, right?!

Posing with their pumpkins on the porch before nap time

There is a huge pumpkin patch nearby with all kinds of attractions.  It’s like the Disney World of the pumpkin patch world.  All of you Nebraskans know the one.  My goal in life (or at least for the next few years) is to keep that place under wraps and keep enjoying the smaller places like Roca.  If one of you tells our kids about this fabled other pumpkin patch, our friendship is over!

I loved that we only paid for admission, the kids were able to lead the way throughout the farm without fear of losing them or having them find something not age appropriate, we didn’t wait in lines, and there were only a few “really spooky” things.

My favorite part?  On the ride home, the kids declared that it was “the best day ever!”
Preparations for Preschool Picture Day

Preparations for Preschool Picture Day

Last year before Jane’s first school pictures, I decided to do an impromptu practice photo shoot in the family room.  Jane and Walt loved standing in front of the blue paper and hamming it up for the camera.

Walt has always been good at giving a grin on command–just not always looking in the right direction.

And then there’s Jane.

Silly girl!

One year later, we’re on the eve of picture day at St. Joseph’s.  Only this year, Jane and Walt will get to have their preschool pictures taken.  Instead of preparing with a practice photo shoot, Jane and Walt decided independently to get their own boo boos.

The exhaustion from the start of the school year is catching up with them.  On the days that they have school, Jane and Walt take turns having epic temper tantrums.  I think their little brains are overloaded by the time they get home.  Heaven help whoever gets in their way!

Jane was having one of her epic temper tantrums yesterday after school while I was trying to make lunch.  When they reach the point of no return, they seem to do best when they are sent to their rooms to work it out away from everyone.  The only trouble with this method is that their bedrooms are upstairs, and the kids are getting tougher and tougher for their 5’3″ mama to get up there.

Yesterday, Jane was being especially squirmy on our journey to her room.  She squirmed out of my arms and fell on the stairs.  She landed squarely on her right brow and outer eye.  Poor girl!  Her ouchie had a little rugburn and instantly turned purple.

The startle from her injury took her out of her temper tantrum.  I laid her down in her bed, got her an ice bag to hold on her boo boo, turned on some lullabies, and let her cool down by herself until lunch.

Then, Walt decided to get an equally impressive injury of his own after dinner.  Jane and Walt were playing in the basement while I was making dinner with Harry at my feet.  I heard a BOOM, Walt screaming, and Jane came running upstairs.  “Mama!  Mama!  Walt is BLEEDING!  It’s BLEEDING EVERYWHERE!!!”

I think my heart stopped beating for five seconds.  I scooped Harry up and ran downstairs to find Walt sprawled next to a ride-on Thomas engine.  He had fallen off the back of it and the engine reared up, smacking him in the mouth, and he had bitten down on his bottom lip with his front teeth.

Fortunately, he didn’t bite deep enough to need stitches, but he has a big fat lip to show for his run-in with Thomas.

My prizefighters, nursing their injuries and playing with Photo Booth

As you might remember, Jane goes to preschool M/W/F, and Walt goes T/TR, so Walt showed off his swollen lip today, and Jane hasn’t shown Mrs. King her eye.  It has turned a beautiful, deep eggplant color.

As I was folding laundry this morning and Jane was coloring at the kitchen table, I casually asked, “Jane, what are you going to tell Mrs. King when she asks you about your ouchie?”

Jane didn’t stop coloring or even look up from her drawing.  “I’ll say that Mama threw me on the stairs.”

WHAT?!  Mama THREW you down the stairs?!  Visions of CPS knocking on our front door flooded into my head.  Deep breath.  “Uh, Jane, let’s not say I threw you down the stairs.  Mommy dropped you when you squirmed out of my arms.”

“Yeah.”  She was still looking down at her drawing, not understanding why I was kinda sorta freaking out.

Instead of preparing for picture day with practice photo shoots, we were practicing with our rehearsal of the picture day “What happened to you?” conversation.

“Okay, Jane, let’s try that again.  Let’s pretend I’m Mrs. King.  ‘Jane, what happened to your eye?'”

“I had an accident with Mommy on the stairs.”

Crap.  She sounds like one of those women on a Lifetime movie about domestic abuse.  “Oh, this huge black eye?  I had an accident with the kitchen broom.”  Don’t overreact, Catherine.  Keep it casual.

“How about, ‘Mommy was carrying me to timeout and I fell?'”

“Okay, Mama.”  Two second pause.  “Do you like my silly unicorn picture?”

I made a deal with Mrs. King at the beginning of the year that she’ll only believe 50% of what the kids tell her, and I’ll only believe 50% of what they tell me.  Let’s hope the deal still stands tomorrow when Jane tells the tale of how she got her black eye!
